Individual Therapy

Dr. Rachael Silverman > Individual Therapy

The process of individual psychological treatment, called psychotherapy, begins with an initial session. We will first discuss the ethical and legal boundaries of confidentiality. Next, I will gather relevant background information, such as the reason you are seeking help, general health, and treatment history. The third step is a thorough evaluation of psychological, behavioral, and social factors, also called a clinical evaluation, and an assessment of any risk factors that could compromise care or safety. Finally, we will identify goals for treatment and put together a treatment plan. Afterwards, I will review all of the information and either at the end of the first session or at the beginning of the second, we will review your prognosis and possible length of treatment. Throughout the consultation process, you will be encouraged to ask questions and verbalize any concerns. If there is need for further assessment or consultation with another professional, such as a psychiatrist for a medication evaluation, we will discuss this together. In addition, if I do not believe that I am the appropriate professional to provide you with treatment, this will be discussed and a referral to the appropriate professional will be made.

Therapy is both a rewarding and a challenging experience because it is essentially about personal growth and change. As in any process involving change, you may experience discomfort, resistance, and ambivalence. In order for progress, psychotherapy involves open communication and discussion of difficult material. Therefore, it is an important part of the therapeutic process to address these issues in therapy. We may work together for as few as five or six sessions or as long as one year, depending on your unique needs and personal goals for therapy.

The duration of treatment is highly variable and depends on many factors, including your goals and past experience with therapy. I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all model of therapy. There are possibly a number of different therapeutic strategies and techniques you will benefit from. This is why we will work together to come up with the most effective plan for you based on your needs, strengths and goals. As a clinical psychologist, I have training and experience in a number of different therapeutic techniques and modalities. I have years of experience providing individual therapy to children, adolescents, and adults struggling with various issues. Overall, the therapeutic process has challenges, but even greater rewards. Through our work together, I will help you change your life and live more authentically.

I do utilize a brief treatment model for my patients in order not to foster dependency. I believe the longer you are in therapy, the more likely you are to believe you are healthy as a result of being in therapy rather than believing you are healthy because of you.

The duration of treatment is highly variable and depends on many factors, including your goals and past experience with therapy. However, I do my best to implement a brief therapeutic model for my younger patients as I have found that the longer a child or adolescent is in therapy, the more likely dependency is.
